Yue (粵)

Siu MaiSo somehow I ended up at the Golden Coast Hotel for lunch today. The place is lush, filled with plush chairs and generous spacing between each table, it provided the perfect setting for a good conversation. Yet please bear in mind that I haven’t had dimsum in a while so I went a little nuts when it came to ordering. Like the typical Hong Kong-er I am, I pretty much scratched through all of the staples: shrimp dumplings, shumai, rice noodle roll and of course my favourite soup dumpling (灌湯餃) that I inhaled – sorry for the lack of pics for that one. July 2 (1)We also ordered fried yam dumplings, pan fried noodles with shrimp and Chinese Kale and a chicken thigh stuffed with glutinous rice. So yes, we took a bit too far and ended up itis-ing on the drive back. Basically imagine a backseat filled with people basking under the summer sun, completely dead to the world. Bliss. July 2 (2)The best dish by far was the chicken. It was stuffed to the brim and was crisp without being too oily. The noodles were not bad but could have been a little crispier. The dimsum was not bad. However I found some of the other dishes a little artificial tasting (especially the barbequed pork, it looked right but tasted like food colouring). Also it is worth noting that everyone got really thirsty from the MSG afterwards. Overall, it was a nice venue and a nice trip out of the city but I’ll not be rushing back anytime soon for the food.
