The Highly Coveted: Lady M

Lady M(1)

One of the neweset addition to Hong Kong’s foodie scene is Lady M Confections – a boutique bakery which has captured the hearts of many in America (it has recently been named one of the 30 “Food Reasons NYC Is Worth The Struggle“)

At Lady M (Hong Kong), they cap you att 6 slices. Luckily, my parents went together so between the two of them they could purchase 12 cakes. We didn’t go that far though. Afterall, we didn’t know if it was going to be worth the hype. They settled at a modest 7 slices ranging from $HKD58-$75.

I have a few cakes still sitting in the fridge but let me talk about the three cakes that I have tried so far. They were heavenly. My favourite of the cakes I tried was the Gateau Nuage which has also been named the “Best Cheesecake in NY” by New York Magazine. It feels like a slice of heaven – the cheesecake feels like biting into a pillow with a tart kick at the end. I sensed a hint of lemon and ricotta in it which elevated the flavours even more. Absolute bliss.
Lady M(2)Their most famous cake by far is their mille crêpe (which has no less than 20 layers) which has been named as one of the Top 10 Cakes in America, takes 30 minutes to craft to make with each paper-thin layer and sweet crême personally assembled by hand. It is topped off by a carmalized glaze.

I enjoyed the milk flavoured one (or as locals call it, The Original) better – I just felt like the green tea powder ($HKD75/ slice) didn’t add anything to the pastry – if anything, it tasted more like a hipster’s green tea latte – which detracted from the flavourfulness (is that a word?) of the milk. But more on the cake: it simply melts in your mouth and dances on the palette; as much as the green tea fell on my expectations (I expected a bitter/earthy aftertaste that just didn’t live up to my expectations – was more like powderly food colouring), it was still pretty good.
